Hi. I'm Steve. I have a background on the creative side of the Film/TV business, both behind and in front of the camera. Over the past couple years, I have been volunteering as an English language coach for new immigrants to California. I have taken a course and earned a certification as an English Language instructor to do this -- with specialized training in pronunciation.
I hold a BA, summa cum laude, from UC Berkeley in California.
My Spanish is at a B-1 to B-2 level. My hobbies include travel, keeping fit, motorcycling (sport bike riding and track days - I am an ex-racer), and bicycling. I follow Premier League Football (aka soccer). I enjoy experiencing live music, stand up comedy and other performances, as well as seeing art on display, in person, which is always better than looking at photos of art. And of course I enjoy quality film and TV. And yes, I also enjoy reading... haha. I am now officially bored and a little embarrassed talking about myself, so I'll just stop. 🤓. I'm a Chinese-Filipino, born and raised in Manila. My father is from China, my mother is from the Philippines, so I grew up surrounded by two distinct yet harmoniously coexisting cultures. From a young age, I was surrounded by multiple languages: English at school, Tagalog in daily life, and a little Chinese at home. Over time, English and Tagalog became my strongest languages, while my Mandarin remained distant, like a voice I could understand but not fully respond to.
Now that I'm in the United States, I'm increasingly eager to reconnect with that part of myself. My father's culture, his stories, and the language that shaped his world—all of these are like a bridge I want to cross. I plan to visit his hometown in China one day, not just as a tourist, but as someone who truly understands the meaning of every word there.
That's why I'm here. I want to improve my Mandarin. Not only academically, but also emotionally, through genuine exchanges with those who deeply understand Filipino culture. In return, I'm more than happy to help others practice their English or Tagalog and share the warmth, humor, and kindness of Filipino culture.
I may still be a beginner in conversational Mandarin, but I believe language communication isn't about perfection, but about connection, patience, and a willingness to grow together.

I moved from Korea to LA this July. I can read, write, and listen in English a little, but speaking is still difficult for me. I’d love to meet a friend nearby who wants to learn Korean.
